Virginia Governor Congratulates Women’s Basketball Team on National Championship

Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin sent Christendom College's women's basketball team a letter on May 3, congratulating them on their recent USCAA National Championship title. Governor Youngkin praised the team's accomplishments in the letter, ultimately thanking them for "strengthening the Spirit of Virginia" through their victory.

"On behalf of the Commonwealth of Virginia, congratulations to the Christendom College Women's Basketball team on winning the USCAA Division II national championship," wrote Governor Youngkin.

"The Lady Crusaders have exemplified the true meaning of grit, dedication, and hard work throughout the year. Your success in winning the championship is a testament to your unwavering commitment to excellence. You have shown us what it means to be part of a community, have integrity, work as a team, and put your heart and soul into everything you do.

Under the guidance of Coach Mary Minick, the team has worked tirelessly to achieve their goals, both on and off the court. You have demonstrated values that make for greatness in sports, inspiring students at Christendom College and making the Commonwealth proud to have them as representatives. The Lady Crusaders have set a standard of excellence that will inspire future generations.

Christendom's women's basketball team defeated Johnson & Wales Charlotte 76-65 in the USCAA DII National Championship game on March 13, bringing home the first women's basketball national title in school history. The electrifying win was the capstone to an incredible National Championship Tournament run by Christendom, who was ranked #7 going into the tournament. They upset the #1, #2, and #3 seeds, stunning their competition and wowing their devoted fanbase — an enormous accomplishment and a testament to the determination, resilience, and talent of the college's student-athletes and coaching staff.

Governor Youngkin's congratulations come in addition to Congressman Ben Cline, who represents Christendom's district, congratulating the team on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives this month as wellThe team was also congratulated by Mayor Lori Cockrell of Christendom's hometown of Front Royal, Virginia on March 26, with a proclamation read to honor them on this historic moment.
