Cross Country Pushes Through Injuries at JMU Invitational

On Saturday morning Christendom College's Cross Country team set out on their second meet of the season at James Madison University. After a week of training and focusing on speed work and pacing, athletes lined up at the starting line to put their training to the test.

JMU hosted its challenging course at New Market Battlefield, just south of Christendom College. The Crusaders competed against other schools such as George Mason University and Longwood University. Christendom's Lady Crusaders ran a 5.2k and finished 5th out of 6 teams, earning 154 points. There were several injured female athletes who ran this race for the experience. Senior Xochitl Ortega ran a 22:24.

The men's race was longer than the women's, totaling an 8k on the battlefield. For the men's team, Junior Anthony Brooks was the first athlete on the team to finish with a time of 32:10. Coach Mike Stanislaw advised runners to experiment with this race saying it is still early enough in the season to try different competing techniques. Coach Stanislaw also advised runners to focus on pacing their miles and coming within 10 seconds of every mile split. The team will get back to work this week, continuing to work on speed, pacing, and technique.

The Crusaders next meet will be on Christendom's Parent's Weekend, September 24th, at Shenandoah University.
