Crusader Rugby Defeats CNU in Season Opener
Saturday, September 10th, Christendom’s Men’s Rugby won their home opening game against CNU, with a dominant 100-22 performance.
Front Royal, VA – Saturday, September 10th, Christendom's Men's Rugby won their home opening game against CNU, with a dominant 100-22 performance.
The Crusaders didn't waste any time getting ahead, Matt Westin (Senior/George Town, Grand Cayman Island) scored the team's first try within the first two minutes of the match. The Crusaders couldn't be stopped as Westin scored again, and was followed by Andrew Krolick (Senior/Tempe, Arizona) who scored the teams third try of the match. David Foeckler (Sophomore, Front Royal, VA) also broke the line and scored his first try after which was quickly followed by Westin again who scored for the third time to bring the score to 29-0. CNU scored their first try of the game a little over midway through the first half and Westin wasted no time in responding, scoring his fourth try of the game. CNU did not back down, scoring twice which cut the lead to 38-15. Nevertheless, the Crusaders stormed into the break with Peter Miller (Junior/Lisbon, OH) adding to the lead with his first try along with Westin again, who scored his fifth try of the half. Thomas Santschi (Senior/Manassas, VA) connected on five of eight conversion kicks and the team went into the half with a comfortable 50-15 lead.
The Crusaders brought the same energy to their play in the second half. Within the first three minutes, Chris Santschi (Sophomore/Manassas VA) punched in his first try and Joseph Kokes (Senior/Absecoa, NJ) scored the first penalty try of the match. Westin continued his dominant performance by scoring his sixth try and John Kennedy (Sophomore/Mt. Vision, NY) got into the mix by scoring his first try of the match. Midway through the second half, Nate Eschbach (Sophomore/Scottsdale, AZ) contributed his first try of the match which was closely followed by another from John Kennedy bringing the lead up to 81-22. With two minutes left in the match, Sam Kristine (Sophomore/Sarver, PA) scored his first try, and the match was finished strong by Foeckler who broke through again to score a penalty try. Foeckler nailed three of six conversions of the second half.
