Crusaders Take Down Royals at the Buzzer
Virginia Beach, Va.- The Christendom men's basketball team pulled off a dramatic 72–70 road victory over NCAA Division III opponent Regent on Wednesday night, sealing the win on a last-second buzzer beater in one of the most thrilling finishes of the season. The Crusaders led 36–31 at halftime and withstood multiple momentum swings before escaping with the two-point win.
Regent came out sharp, jumping to an early 10–4 lead, but Christendom quickly responded to level the score at 10–10. From there, the opening half turned into a back-and-forth battle, with neither team able to create separation. In the final minute before the break, the Crusaders delivered a decisive surge, closing the half on a 7–0 run to take a five-point advantage into halftime.
Christendom built on that momentum early in the second half, stretching the lead to as many as 13 points, highlighted by efficient perimeter shooting and strong ball movement. Michael Vander Woude spearheaded the offensive charge with a standout performance, scoring a game-high 22 points on an ultra-efficient 7-of-9 shooting, including a remarkable 6-of-7 from three-point range. John Fowler added 17 points, knocking down three triples and going 6-of-9 at the free-throw line, while also contributing 4 assists and 3 steals.
Despite trailing 52–39 with 15 minutes remaining, Regent refused to go away. The Royals steadily chipped into the deficit, cutting the lead to six with five minutes left and keeping the margin within striking distance. Over the final two minutes, Regent capitalized on missed opportunities by the Crusaders and surged ahead, taking a 70–69 lead on a layup with just two seconds remaining.
Out of a Christendom timeout, the Crusaders drew up one final chance—and it delivered instant history. Bobby Vander Woude caught the inbounds pass just beyond half court, took one dribble, and launched a shot from well past midcourt that banked in at the buzzer, stunning the home crowd and securing the 72–70 victory. Vander Woude finished with 16 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists, capping his all-around performance with the game-winning moment.
Christendom also received strong contributions across the lineup, including Edmund Thomas, who pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds to go along with 8 points, and Luke Vander Woude, who added 3 points and 2 assists off the bench. The Crusaders finished the night shooting 61.9 percent from three-point range and 61.1 percent from the free-throw line, while assisting on 15 made baskets.
The thrilling win marked a statement road victory for Christendom, highlighted by resilience, efficient scoring, and a finish that will be remembered as one of the most dramatic moments of the season.
