Mont Alto, PA - Christendom College Men's Soccer Team had an exciting start to the season finishing 1-1 at the Mont Alto Labor Day Classic this weekend. Although the Crusaders took a tough loss 8-1 to the Berkeley-NJ Knights on Friday August 30th, the team came back with an impressive 4-1 victory over the Penn State Mont Alto Nittany Lions the following day.
The first day of the tournament, the Crusaders faced a familiar opponent, Berkeley-NJ. Christendom came out strong in the first half, delivering the first blow to the Knights. Within the first ten minutes of the game, Crusader's Michael Townsend (Senior/ Front Royal, VA) found the back of the net with a ball from Sean Corcoran (Senior/ Lawrence, NJ) to give their team a 1-0 lead. Christendom carried this moment through the first half and maintained the lead. The second half brought new challenges for the Crusaders, and they were unable to hold onto their lead. Despite the team's effort on defense, the Knights put up multiple goals in the remaining time to secure the game. The game ended with a final score of 8-1 the Knights over the Crusaders.
On August 31st, the second day of the Mont Alto Labor Day Classic, Christendom College brought renewed energy to their play, unaffected by their loss the day before. The Crusaders took on USCAA rival Penn State Mont Alto. Just minutes after the game began, Junior Niall Maguire (Junior/ Chantilly, VA) put the Crusaders on top 1-0 thanks to an assist from Townsend. The Crusaders continued to play aggressively and found the back of the net twice before the half was over with goals from Townsend and Isaias Odiatu (Sophomore/ Winnipeg, Canada). The second half started with the Crusaders shutting out the Nittany Lions 2-0. Despite the impressive game Michael Vander Woude (Freshman/ Manassas, VA) was having in net, Penn State Mont Alto found a connection up top leading to a goal. Before the final whistle, the Crusaders continued to control the game and added to their lead with another goal from Townsend. The tournament came to a close as the Crusaders defeated the Nittany Lions 4-1 in an exciting victory.
