New Kensington, PA - The Christendom Crusaders Women's Soccer Team travelled to Penn State New Kensington, bringing home an 8-2 victory over Nittany Lions on Saturday, 9/14.
The Lions started strong, gaining an early 1-0 lead after scoring a breakaway goal in the fourth minute of the game. However, the Crusaders were unfazed, and Mary Curran (Freshman/Manassas, VA) quickly answered off a cross from Catherine Thomas (Senior/Corpus Christi, TX) two minutes later. The score remained tied 1-1 until the 28th minute, when Theresa Luckey (Sophomore/Front Royal, VA) scored an unassisted goal, giving the Crusaders a 2-1 lead. By the end of the half, the Crusaders had built up a dominating 4-1 lead after two additional goals. One was scored by Georgia Francis (Senior/Front Royal, VA) and assisted by Luckey, and the other was tapped in by Juliana Taylor (Freshman/Linden, VA) off an on-frame attempt by Elisa Duca (Sophomore/ Warrenton, VA). The Crusaders continued to command the pace of the game until the end of the first half.
Both teams came out with aggression in the second half, but the Crusaders dominating offensive presence proved too much for the Lions. Miranda Keller (Senior/Harrisburg, PA) opened the scoring for the half volleying in a cross from Ava Hudson (Freshman/Manassas, VA). Her goal was followed in short order by an unassisted Crusader goal from Thomas to increase their lead to 6-1. Luckey earned a hat trick, scoring two additional goals assisted by Hudson and Mary Corcoran (Junior/Lawrence, NJ). The Lions scored one final goal, making the score 8-2, but their efforts proved to be too late. The final whistle confirmed the Crusaders' fifth straight win.
