Mont Alto, PA – The Christendom Crusader Women's Basketball team faced off against the Penn State Mont Alto Nittany Lions in a USCAA match up on Wednesday, January 29th. In their second competition of the season, the Crusaders beat the Lions 68-49.
In the first quarter, the Lions were unable to penetrate the Crusaders' stifling defense and full-court pressure. However, the Crusaders had a field day on the offensive end, setting the pace and swinging the ball to create scoring opportunities. Due to the deadly combination of Christendom's aggressive defense and intense offense, they outscored the lions 16-5 in the first quarter. By halftime, the Crusaders held a 16-point lead.
Looking to build on that lead, the Crusaders came out strong once again in the second half. They continued to push the ball up the floor and maintained their defensive pressure. Although the Lions rallied in the second half, their efforts fell short, and they were unable to dismantle the Crusader lead. By the end of the game, the Crusaders had secured a 68-49 victory, bringing their season record to an impressive 14-1.
As usual, the Crusaders displayed great teamwork and each player contributed valuable points, rebounds, and steals to their victory. Catherine Thomas (Senior/Corpus Christi, TX) led in scoring with 28 points, and she also secured 10 rebounds and earned five steals. Mary Pennefather led the charge offensively not only by scoring 20 points of her own, but also by creating scoring opportunities for her teammates with eight assists. Miranda Keller also played an important role doing the dirty work down low. In the face of tough physical competition, she brought down 11 rebounds, snatched four steals, assisted two baskets, and had six points of her own. The team effort and chemistry demonstrated by the Crusaders will carry them into the final eight games of their regular season as they continue to work hard and build on their previous success.
Next up: The Crusaders will travel to Chesapeake College to compete against the Skipjacks on Saturday, February 1st at 12pm.
