After defeating Western Oregon and Duke in the first two rounds of the championship tournament on Friday, they ultimately came up short against Slippery Rock in the national semifinal game on Saturday.

As the game began, the Crusaders came on top first 3-0, with a penalty kick by Frank Woltering (Freshman). Christendom continued to play an aggressive game and put in the first try of the game. The Washington and Lee Screaming Minks responded by gaining 3 points off a penalty kick. Following the kick, the Crusaders offense gained incredible momentum. Chris Santschi (Junior) scored back-to-back tries. Santschi’s tries were followed by three more from Christendom’s offense, as well as multiple conversions. The first half came to a close with a score of 46-3, the Crusaders dominating their opponent.
Christendom Rugby is back. The Crusaders returned to the pitch on Saturday to take on Franciscan University of Steubenville in the annual Shield Match, defeating the Barons in a 37-34 thriller. Meanwhile, the men’s soccer team picked up their first three wins of the season, including in a rousing home opener on Tuesday, the women’s soccer team remained undefeated with a crushing defeat of Penn State Beaver, and the women’s volleyball team went 1-2 in the USCAA Penn State Beaver Tournament.

Christendom’s path to another rugby National Championship title is now set, with the official schedule for the Collegiate Rugby Championship May Madness 7s released this week by National Collegiate Rugby. The team, coming off a rugby 15s National Championship in December, will begin competition in New Orleans next Saturday, May 28, playing in a pool of 28 total teams for the Small College title.

Senior Owen Kennedy has faced many challenges on rugby fields and basketball courts over the past four years. Tough opponents, six am workouts, the balance of school and athletic demands — the list goes on. But his greatest challenge may have come before he even started college, when he faced an issue many Catholic high schoolers can relate to: where could he both learn and also thrive as a Catholic? School after school failed to meet those criteria. Finally, after praying for guidance, he found what he was looking for at Christendom, where he has been able to study mathematics, win a National Championship in rugby, grow in virtue, and impact the school for the better.
